Pune’s popularity has been on the rise as more and more internationally acclaimed brands and multinationals are making this important city a part of their plan. This city that enjoys the best of all worlds, has won many nicknames Hotbed of IT, Detroit of India, Cultural Capital and most importantly Oxford of the East.

 

The name Oxford of the East has been the oldest and the most important as Pune has broken new grounds in academics across all streams. Education has become the mainstay of Pune, resulting in students from across the world coming to India. Furthermore, the increasing demand for manpower in sectors like IT, automotive, engineering etc. has only triggered the knowledge center called Pune.

The city is conveniently approachable by air, rail and road transport, having connectivity with all major cities of India, particularly to Mumbai – the financial capital of India.

Pune is situated near the Western margin of the Deccan Plateau. It lies on the leeward side of the Sahyadri range (the Western ghats), 560m above sea level, at the confluence of the Mula and Mutha rivers. Two more rivers, Pavana and Indrayani, traverse the North-Western outskirt of the urban area.
The Sinhgad -Katraj Dive Ghat range is the southern boundary of the urban area. The highest point in the city is Vetal Hill (800m above msl) whereas the highest point just outside the urban area is the Sinhgad Fort (1300 meters above msl). Officially, Pune District is spread over 15,642 sq. kms.

Temperatures in Pune range from 150C to 400C.

The city receives an annual rainfall of 721.6mm, mainly between June and September as a result of the South West monsoon.

The population of Pune District is 3,446,330 (2010). Marathi, English and Hindi are the commonly spoken languages here.
