Orthodontics is that speciality of Dentistry that deals with the prevention and correction of dental and facial irregularities. The common problems which require an Orthodontist’s intervention are proclination, crowding, spacing between teeth, extra or missing teeth, cleft lip and palate and other irregularities of the jaws. Orthodontic treatment may be focused on dental displacement only, or it could deal with the control and/or modification of facial growth. In the latter case, it is better defined as “Dentofacial Orthopedics”. It is also within the scope of Orthodontists to diagnose, evolve treatment plans and treat conditions requiring Orthognathic Surgeries along with the Oral Surgeons for the correction of severe jaw abnormalities.
