Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology is a specialty of dentistry and a discipline of pathology that deals with the nature, identification and management of diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial region. The subject represents the confluence of basic sciences and clinical dentistry. Knowledge in this field is acquired through adaptation of methods and disciplines of those sciences basic to dental practice such as, gross & microscopic anatomy, chemistry, microbiology, physiology and through information obtained by clinical histories & observation of patients. Oral pathologist attempts to understand the disease so that it can be properly diagnosed & and adequately treated.
Our aim is to provide accurate diagnosis for different types of diseases. The department also functions in conjunction with hematology providing basic data required to begin any appropriate treatment. The diagnosis submitted by us aids the surgeons to have insight into disease process, give adequate treatment thereby improving the prognosis. Besides being a teaching department, we also engage in research with the current focus being in the areas of oral cancer, pre-cancer, HIV screening and the oral status related to systemic conditions.
On the whole, the department is continuing to grow in an advanced way from its infancy stage till date. The achievements of the department can be mapped by the quality of study material provided, continuous up gradation of the lab diagnostic instruments, meticulous teaching, active interaction with the students and transparency in the assessment methods which helps to create a well trained student.
