Department of Oral Medicine & Radiology

Oral Diagnosis is the art and science of identifying an oral disease from its symptoms and signs. Oral Medicine is that specialty of dentistry concerned with the basic diagnostic procedures and techniques useful in recognizing the diseases of the Oral and Maxillofacial tissues of local and constitutional origin and their medical management.

This section sees approximately 20,000 patients a year. Faculty members in the section are responsible for screening and evaluation of all new patients. They are equipped to train students to evaluate new patients seeking dental treatment by taking a comprehensive history and physical examination. Based upon clinical findings, students determine the patient’s medical risk for dental care, formulate dental management modifications, develop a list of required dental specialist consults, order the appropriate diagnostic tests and compile a comprehensive list of differential diagnosis.

As needed, students perform biopsies, culture and sensitivity testing, vital staining and cytological smears. A high resolution intra-oral camera (SOPRO 595 Touch) is available for effective patient education and record-keeping. Students are expected to determine the significant issues, logically discuss the management of these problems and delineate a specific action plan.

Dental & Maxillo-facial Radiology:

Oral Radiography is an art and science of producing photographic images of oral tissues through use of X-radiation. Oral Radiology is a science composed of technical and interpretative procedures that interdependently result in useful diagnostic data. The teaching mission of this section is to educate dental students about the principles and applications of ionizing radiation in the diagnosis of orofacial disease. This includes ensuring that the students have an appreciation for radiation physics, the biologic hazards attendant to the use of ionizing radiation, as well as the use of a systematic radiographic approach to the identification of normal anatomy and pathologic conditions.

This section sees over 25,000 patients every year. Our services range from conventional intra-oral and panoramic radiography to skull and TMJ imaging. We are equipped for conventional film, as well as intra-oral digital imaging system (Planmeca dixi). Additionally, an Automatic processing unit (VELOPEX-EXTRA XE), which can process both intra-oral as well as extra-oral radiographs, is available.
